Dr. Robert Snyder and Dr. Brian Hunter are committed to providing exceptional eye care for our patients in Tucson, Green Valley, and surrounding areas of Southern Arizona.

Robert W. Snyder, MD, PhD, PC

Dr. Robert SnyderDr. Snyder is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained eye surgeon with expertise in modern cataract surgery, glaucoma screening, diagnosis and treatment as well as macular degeneration screening and grading. He was one of the early surgeons to perform Laser Vision Correction and LASIK and now prefers to operate on the surface of the eye without cutting a “stromal flap”.

I strive to do things right and embrace the challenge to continuously improve my techniques, reduce the risk to my patients, and obtain the best results I possibly can. I feel blessed to be able to perform eye surgery, and find the same enjoyment in performing microsurgery now that I first experienced 27 years ago.”

Dr. Snyder is currently recognized as one of the “Best Doctors in America” and as one of the “Best Docs” in Tucson and has been recognized as such since 1998. He has been active as an educator to medical students, residents, Ophthalmology fellows , and primary care doctors. He has lectured on 4 continents on cataract surgery, laser surgery, and preventing and treating infections of the eye.

He set up an eye bank in Sinaloa Mexico and currently provides volunteer services for the Lions clubs and other organizations. For his work, he has received numerous awards for the prevention of eye diseases, including the Lions distinguished “Humanitarian of the Year” awarded for the state of Arizona.

Dr Snyder is also active in research. He has been funded by the NIH and industry. He is the co founder of SnyderBiomedical and the S2C (Science to Cure ) Research Foundation. He has over 75 peer-reviewed articles and abstracts and 2 patents. His professional activities include a leadership role as past President of the Ocular Microbiology and Immunology Group, services as Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, membership and regular participation in the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Snyder has lived in Tucson for 22 years, and he is currently a tenured Professor of Biomedical Engineering and in the past had served as the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology for ~ 14 years. Besides eye surgery, Dr. Snyder enjoys spending time with his wife and family — particularly his new granddaughter. He is an avid fisherman and skier, he enjoys playing tennis and golf, and roots for the Wildcats and Badgers.

Brian A. Hunter, MD

Dr. Brian HunterBrian A. Hunter, M.D. is a comprehensive ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and refractive surgery. Originally from Minnetonka, Minnesota, Dr. Hunter received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School where he also received his bachelor’s degree in Biology. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in ocular pathology at the University of Utah, Moran Eye Center prior to completing residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Hunter is currently the Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Southern Arizona Veterans Administration Hospital and is also the Section Chief of Cataract Surgery, a position he has held for the past two years. He performed 589 cataracts last year including 250 cases supervising residents. He is also a clinical instructor in comprehensive ophthalmology and cataract surgery at the University of Arizona.

He has a special interest in complex and mature cataract surgery including monocular patients or patients with complex medical histories. He is completing a fellowship in laser vision correction refractive surgery and is certified in use of the VISX STAR S4 Excimer laser with CustomVue technology.

Dr. Hunter is a knowledgeable, conscientious, and compassionate physician. He believes in the importance of investing time into educating patients about their health concerns and believes that trust, patience, and a sense of humor are important ingredients in a healthy doctor-patient relationship.

He has been happily married for 3 years. He and his wife enjoy spending time with their 10-month old son and their two dogs. Dr. Hunter also enjoys hiking, playing guitar, playing squash, photography, traveling, and bonsai gardening. His favorite pastime, of course, is playing with his son.
